The importance of establishing routines for children

Routines are important for every child to learn from a young age so that it helps in their development and growth.

Establishing routines for your child will seek to their advantage as it will improve their communication skills and build their self confidence.

Having daily routines might include activities like:

-Time they wake up and get ready in the morning

-Their meal times, bath times and nap times

-Play time with their friends

Here are some ways you can establish routines for your children:

1- Learn self control

Routines teach your baby to learn self control.

When they start doing activities at a certain time every day it will help them quickly learn and accept these routines as part of their daily life.

When they know it is time for them to take a nap, eat their meal or play they will start looking forward to do these activities and it will help establish a sense of safety and security with them.

2- Power struggles

When children learn to expect what will happen next then they won’t be surprised when you ask them to take a nap or eat their meal.

You can even ask them to take control of the situation by asking them to brush their teeth before nap time or wash their hands before their meals.

3- Safety

Following the same routines everyday will fill them with a sense of security and allow them to trust you and your family.

They will learn positive behaviour from following these routines regularly.

4- Social skills

Routines will help develop social skills in your child.

When they learn to say “thank you”, “sorry” or “good morning” every time they do certain activities with you it will teach them to behave the same with other people as well.

5- Transitions

Your child might find it difficult to prepare for certain activities like they might find it difficult to fall asleep at the regularly scheduled nap time.

To make it easier for them you can always read out loud their favourite story which will help them fall asleep.

6- Parental happiness

Watching your child complete their daily tasks everyday will give you a sense of pride.

Having children in your life can put certain strain on you if you don’t establish routines for them to follow so that they continue to do so even when they have grown up.

7- Learning

Following routines everyday will help your child develop their motor skills, build self confidence, language skills, social skills and self control.

8- Schedule

Routines followed consistently will help your child’s body clock to be set for their activities everyday.

They will be able to nap peacefully, eat meals without worry, regulate healthy bowel movements ans enjoy their play time even more.

9- Calm household

When your child learns to accept these routines everyday then they won’t protest or get stressed over it.

It will help them prepare for what activities they are about to do next.

10- Family bond

If you do certain family activities with them regularly in a week then they will love looking forward to spending time with you and other members of your family.

For example if you wake up and eat breakfast together as a family it will help strengthen family bond and values.
